Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
IACC does not pre-arrange Continuing Education Units (CEUs) with degree-granting institutions or certification programs. Yet, some past attendees have successfully obtained credit for IACC courses. You should check directly with your school or source of certification to determine whether they will consider the Annual Conference as part of their requirements and, if so, what materials you must submit to secure such credit.

  • Examine conference center sales and public relations techniques and nuances.
  • Become acquainted with the latest trends in conference technology.

University Forum
They may or may not have guest rooms. They may be located on the main campus or 50 miles away. They may report to the Dean of Continuing Education, a Vice President of the
BusinessSchool or the Director of Auxiliary Services today—and someone else tomorrow. Welcome to the world of university conference centers, a world that’s full of politics, surprises and constantly changing org charts.

University conference centers represent almost a third of IACC’s active membership. They are a strong segment-within-a-segment and while there may be huge differences among them, they do have a lot in common.

Join your colleagues in college and university conference centers to address common challenges and issues and acquire best practices that you can use in your own operations.

Facilitator: Tom Cole, Fearless Leader, Arden Shisler Conference Center, The Ohio State University

Grab this tremendous opportunity to share best practices and solutions to today’s operational and financial challenges.

A veteran group of presenters will dispense essential information and solicit your ideas and techniques.

Seating is limited and requires completion of a pre-workshop survey. Participants are encouraged to bring property brochures, marketing information, etc.

The “Popcork” Experience™ Gone Green: Exploring Organic Food & Wine Pairings

Industry veteran and noted food and wine educator Sharon
Charny will bring her unique food and wine pairing experience to
the 2009 IACC Conference attendees in this highly entertaining
and interactive seminar – Gone Green!

Using a neutrally flavored medium – popcorn – Charny will lead attendees through a tasting of four different ‘green’ wines,
featuring specific grape varietals, along with different flavors of
popcorn – lemon, salt, sugar and spice.

As each wine is tasted with each flavor, participants will discuss what the flavor represents in a menu or recipe, while discovering which flavors enhance the wines (or not)! This seminar open up the palate to the ways that certain food flavors can completely change the way the wine and food taste together – all with an eye toward meeting increasing consumer demand for organic options.

During the discussion, Charny will also discuss common
misperceptions about “organic” or “green” wines and what
actually constitutes a “certified organic wine.”The result of completing this workshop is a better understanding of not only food and wine pairings, but also how to integrate organic wines into existing menus.

The Complete Meeting Experience Package (CMEP) - it's not about Ergonomic Chairs!

For years IACC conference centers have focused their energies and financial resources on creating comfortable meeting environments through the use of ergonomic chairs, hard writing surface tables, tackable walls, appropriate lighting levels and temperature controls.  Not surprisingly, copy-cat non-IACC properties have sprouted up with many of the same amenities.  Going forward, the success of IACC conference centers may very well depend on their abilities to shift the lens and devote energies on creating complete meeting experiences which are both memorable and transformational.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn what other conference centers are doing to create memorable learning experiences
  • Develop new strategies in design and service to distinguish your conference center from other venues
  • Create opportunities for your employees to impact the experience of your guests
  • Utilize the surroundings of your location to create transformational meetings and events

Selling Into’ a Down Economy
There is a phrase that if you keep on doing what you have always done you will keep on getting what you’ve gotten before – but not in this economy! If you keep on doing what you did last year you will get less than you got last year – a lot less!
  • Get aggressive in locating new business -- Focus on those market sectors doing well. There are market sectors doing better than others. We will look at the research for the opportunities and cost effective, innovative ways to reach out to the real people and companies within those opportunities. This applies to all properties – from select serves to group houses.
  • The Economic Stimulus bounce --   Which companies and organizations are the most likely to benefit from the Economic Stimulus package. How to locate them to develop your hotel’s own ‘economic stimulus!
  • Strategic Prospecting Strategies. A strategic prospecting effort will pay off -- it is the difference between a shot gun and a scatter shot approach.     Once the target sectors are identified and the companies and organizations within them, we will focus on doing the research to locate info about the company and how to use it.
  • The ‘customer centric’ approach strategy.    How can you get a prospects’’ attention and set yourself apart from the other 100 hotels ‘chatter’ to get their attention. The customer is clearly in the ‘driver’s seat’! We will explore the development of compelling approach messages that can be used in multiple ways such as telephone, email and referrals.
  • Incentives to close the business. Don’t’ just lower pricing to get the business – cut deals selectively. WE will explore proven tactics to close the business in a competitive environment -- actual case studies from other hotels that work!
This is not the time to ‘hunker down’ – it is the time to aggressively go after new business! In this seminar, participants will be able to focus on new prospects, understand how to effectively approach them to get their attention and close the business in ways that don’t break the budget!
